Dear Families,

I hope you all had an enjoyable spring vacation. We are now entering the home stretch of the school year. The month of April will be a busy month with many fun and exciting educational events occurring. It all starts on April 9 with Geography Week. During that time, each class will focus on a continent and create murals/collages specific to that area of study. Over the course of the week, the children will be asked to wear shirts pertaining to geography. They will play geography games and finish up the week by having our 4th/5th graders participate in a geography bee.

Tuesday, April 10 will be our last early dismissal day of the school year. These days have been developed to allow teachers to participate in professional development activities. These opportunities bring training in areas such as technology and literacy instruction, and for committees to meet. The advantage of early dismissal days is that it cuts down the need to have teachers out of the classroom too much.

Students should bring their appetites to school on Thursday, April 12 for Hot Dog Day. The fun continues into the afternoon with a special assembly, African Village Folktales. The next day, Friday, April 13 is Family Movie Night. Come join us for a fun filled movie taking place in the Blythe Park auditorium. Our thanks to the PTA for hosting the events.

Blythe Park School goes green the week of April 23 with our celebration of Earth Week. Students will be “dressing up the Earth” by wearing clothing that symbolizes the colors of the Earth. During the week, students will also promote environmental awareness by decorating bags from Riverside Foods where they will be returned and used by customers. The celebrations continue with classroom presentations on the Earth and its creatures by the Trailside Museum, part of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County. The week culminates with a tree planting and rapture assembly on Friday, April 27. The assembly will end with activity stations where students make recycling projects to take home.

Finally, our new kindergartners for the 07-08 school year will be special guests on the afternoon of Tuesday, April 24.
As with all these events, further information will be sent out with more specific details.

It’s a great time to be a student at Blythe Park School!

Congratulations to Daniela Pope who was awarded for the Illinois PTA Reflections contest for her watercolor drawing, “My Favorite Place”.

Safety Reminders

As we emphasize, “Being Safe”as one of our Blythe Park School expectations, we ask that you please help us in the following areas:

When driving to school, drop children off on the school side of Leesley. This prevents children from crossing in front of moving traffic.

If you must park your car or are walking your child to school, use one of the two crosswalk areas located at the north and south end of Leesley in front of the school.

Please drive with caution in front of the school and in the Blythe Park vicinity.

As a courtesy to others, please refrain from parking in front of neighboring driveways.

A school bus may be present to pick up/drop off children in front of the school. Bus drivers have been asked to park at the far south end of Leesley to allow traffic to pass until the children they are picking up are outside. We appreciate your patience while the bus is loading/unloading children.

We love to see all our K-9 friends accompanying students to school each morning. For the safety of our children at drop off and pick up time, we ask that dogs be kept off school property and remain on the parkway area along Leesley.

I thank all of you for signing in at the office and wearing a visitor’s badge when visiting/volunteering in our school.

In the name of safety, I encourage you to help us all work together to keep Blythe Park a safe environment to send our children. If you have any questions or suggestions, please do not hesitate to let me know.

Children who go home for lunch should return in time for the 12:25 bell. While it is very tempting for children to want to join their friends on the playground, we ask that children who have gone home for lunch not go onto the playground when they return. With a set number of children to supervise each day, having additional children showing up at random would pose a supervisory issue. We appreciate your support in this matter.

The School Day
Please help us avoid classroom distractions that impact student learning:

• If you have items or messages to give your child, please leave them with our secretary, Mrs. Marchuk. She will deliver the message/item to the classroom.

• If you ever need to speak with a teacher during the school day, you may either leave a message in our office (708-447-2168) or you can email the teacher (last name followed by first initial @district96.org) and they will get back to you.
