From the desk of Ms. DeVylder...

Happy February! I hope the chill in the air has not dampened the warmth in your heart. I am happy to see some new snow, and I’m sure the children are looking forward to more snowmen, snowforts, and snowballs – though not at school!

February is a short and busy month at Hollywood. Parent-Teacher conferences will be held on Friday, February 15 from 12:30 – 3:15 p.m. As in October, teachers will schedule selected conferences based on need. If you do not receive notice of a conference but would like to speak/meet with your child’s teacher, please contact the teacher. We value communication between home and school and recognize its importance in your child’s success. The second trimester will end on February 29 and report cards will go home on Monday, March 3. I am always amazed at how much children grow and change over time. I am so very proud of how much our students have achieved over the course of this year

There are two important dates for parents of our youngest community members in February. On February 21 and 22, District 96 will offer pre-school screening for children ages 3-5 years. Appointments must be scheduled through Ms. Pescador in our school office. Kindergarten Registration for the 2008-09 school year will be on Thursday, March 6 at 7:00 p.m. at Hollywood School. This is an evening for parents only, please. Please notify any of your neighbors who are parents of young children of these two important events. As a reminder, the Kindergarten Enrichment Program will no longer be available beginning in 2008-09.

Traffic safety has become a larger issue at Hollywood, and I need your help. Please remember to drop-off and pick-up your children on the east side of Hollywood Avenue. Cars that are standing/parked on the west side of Hollywood Avenue impede traffic flow and make it difficult for drivers and pedestrians to see oncoming cars. I have asked Officer Kudla, from the Brookfield Police Department, to monitor traffic at Hollywood and from RBHS as well, with good results. The safety of children is first and foremost.

District 96 elementary principals have begun to develop a survey for parents, students, and teachers – sort of a “360°” look at how we serve those most important to us. This survey is expected to go online and be available to all before spring break. The information gathered will be directed to each individual school and be used by the school’s leadership team for school improvement planning. Look for more information as we get closer to spring…

As you know, Hollywood is not just about business – we like to have fun, too! Read the PTA news and check out the Hollywood calendar at the end of the newsletter to find out what fun events are happening this month. Take time this month to spend some quality time with your child and your family at one of the many Hollywood activities in February.

May your February be filled with love!
