Superintendent's Message

Dear Parents and Guardians,

I hope you are enjoying the last weeks of summer break. We are excited to welcome you to the 2019-2020 school year. Whether you are new to District 96 or have been with us for many years, the beginning of the school year is always a great time to connect.

The first day of school for District 96 students will be Wednesday, August 21. Early Learners and Kindergarten students will have scheduled Meet and Greet activities on August 21 with the first day of regular session on August 22. Your child(ren)’s principal will send out communication directly from the school to orient you to the schedules and details specific to your District 96 school.

If you have not yet completed residency verification (new students, Kindergarten, Third Grade and Sixth Grade) please visit the District Office to complete the necessary components of that process.

Please note that as of August 12, the District Office will be located at 3340 S. Harlem Avenue
at the corner of Quincy St. and Harlem Ave.  Part of the summerwas spent packing boxes and relocating the offices. We are excited to settle into this new space and to provide Central School students the former District Office space. The long-range facility plan goals address a plan for converting this space to a multi-purpose room (large group learning and lunch space) for Central School. We anticipate addressing that work during the summer of 2020.

As we launch the new school year, we welcome the new Director of Teaching and Learning, Ms. Angela Dolezal to the district leadership team. We are fortunate to also welcome nine talented educators to our team in District 96. Our wonderful teachers have spent time organizing classrooms and honing skills and ideas for the coming year. They are excited to meet your children, to connect, to learn and to grow together.

During the months ahead, we will continue to connect with all of you through Open House, parent emails and website updates. Having you as our partner in your child’s educational journey is the key to success. We encourage you to stay connected and involved not only in your child’s educational success, but with District 96 news and events. Consider following your child’s school on Facebook or Twitter. We invite you to attend a Board of Education meeting or to tune in via YouTube. We will continue to connect with all of you as our long-range facility plan becomes a reality. Our goal is to complete the final stages of our intensive facility planning process with implementation the Fall of 2020. We will continue to use email, the District 96 website and community engagement sessions to keep you informed along the way.

Your child’s teacher is the most important point of contact for questions about your student’s education. If you have questions or concerns beyond the classroom, never hesitate to contact your child’s principal or to reach out to our District Office team. My office hours are on the third Wednesday of the month between 4:00 and 6:30, beginning August 21. Please email me if you are interested in setting up a time to talk.

I wish you and yours a wonderful school year ahead. I know you will be connected, inspired and impressed by your child’s learning, growth and change in the coming year.

Sincerely Yours,

Martha Ryan-Toye
