Transition Opportunities: Fifth Grade to Sixth Grade

District 96 offers several opportunities to help fifth graders feel confident and supported as they move from elementary school to junior high. For questions, contact:

Pasta Dinner

Fifth-graders and their families are invited to the annual PTO pasta dinner (typically held in February). At the dinner, 8th-grade student leaders are available to give future Cougars a guided tour and introduction to the building and common areas in a low-pressure environment. (February 5, 2026)

Step Up Day

This is a special day at the end of the school year where all 5th grade classes walk to Hauser. Students learn more about Hauser and meet the 6th grade and Encore teachers while in the comfort of their 5th grade classmates and teacher.

Summer School

This 4-day summer school class, Transition to Hauser, gives students a “feel” for being a middle schooler. Activities include learning to operate a combination lock, organize a locker, navigate the building with a sample schedule, and stay organized with an assignment notebook. This optional summer school class opens for registration each spring. (July 13-16; July 20-23; July 27-30; August 3-6)

6th Grade First Look

This is an evening in August before school starts for 6th-grade students and their families to visit Hauser. Students set up their locker and practice walking their schedule while parents meet the principals and attend a presentation.

Special Education

Parents of students who have Individualized Educational Programs (IEPs) will be invited to an articulation meeting with members of their child’s 5th-grade team and a representative from the Hauser special education team to discuss how their child’s special education supports will be provided at Hauser.

White Pines

After the school year starts, sixth-grade students are invited to connect with their new classmates during a school-sponsored overnight, outdoor education field trip to White Pines Ranch in Oregon, IL.

Other Annual Events

Throughout the year, events take place at Hauser for students and families to attend in a relaxed setting, including plays, musicals, family learning nights, and concerts. Check our calendar of events.
